1. Website operator and controller

This Cookie Policy applies to the HIGH-LEVEL project website operated by:

Association Européenne du Charbon et du Lignite — EURACOAL

Rue Belliard 40
1040 Brussels
Belgium

Email: high-level@euracoal.eu

The website supports the HIGH-LEVEL project, “European Coal in Transition”, funded under the Research Fund for Coal and Steel.

Information about the wider processing of personal data is available in the HIGH-LEVEL Privacy Policy .

2. What cookies and similar technologies are

Cookies are small text files that a website stores on a visitor’s computer, mobile device or browser. They allow the website to remember technical information or choices during a browsing session or for a limited period.

Similar technologies may include local browser storage, scripts, pixels, security tokens and device information used for comparable technical purposes.

Some cookies are placed directly by this website. Others may be placed by external providers whose services are integrated into the website.

3. Legal framework

The use of cookies and similar technologies is governed by applicable European and Belgian electronic communications and data-protection legislation, including the ePrivacy rules and the General Data Protection Regulation.

Technologies that are strictly necessary to provide a service requested by the visitor or to ensure the secure operation of the website may be used without prior consent.

Cookies used for other purposes, such as optional analytics, personalisation, advertising or behavioural tracking, require prior consent where applicable.

Consent must be freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous. Visitors must also be able to withdraw it as easily as they gave it.

4. Types of cookies

Strictly necessary cookies

These technologies are required for the website to load, operate securely, remember essential choices and provide functions explicitly requested by the visitor.

They cannot normally be disabled through the website because doing so may prevent essential parts of the site from working correctly.

Functional cookies

Functional cookies may remember choices that improve the visitor’s experience, such as language, interface or consent preferences.

Analytics cookies

Analytics cookies measure how visitors use a website. They may collect information such as page views, approximate location, browser type or interaction patterns.

The HIGH-LEVEL website does not intentionally activate optional third-party analytics tools through its own content unless this policy and the corresponding consent mechanism are updated.

Advertising and profiling cookies

The HIGH-LEVEL website does not intentionally use advertising, behavioural profiling or personalised marketing cookies through its own content.

5. Technologies currently used

Provider or feature Purpose Category Typical duration Status
WordPress.com / Automattic Website hosting, page delivery, platform security, administration and essential technical operation. Strictly necessary or functional, depending on the specific technology and visitor action. Session-based or for the period specified by WordPress.com. Active
Cookie consent preference To remember whether a visitor has interacted with the cookie notice and the preference selected. Strictly necessary. Until the consent preference expires or the visitor deletes browser data. Active
Cloudflare Turnstile To protect the contact form against spam, automated activity and abusive submissions. Strictly necessary security technology when the contact form is used. Generally limited to the verification process and any security period determined by Cloudflare. Active
WordPress.com administrator cookies Authentication, account security and administration for authorised website editors. Strictly necessary. Session-based or according to the login and account settings. Editors only

Important: the precise cookie names and durations may change when WordPress.com, Cloudflare or installed website components are updated. This table therefore describes the current purposes and providers rather than claiming an exhaustive fixed technical inventory.

6. Third-party services

WordPress.com and Automattic

The website is hosted and operated using WordPress.com services provided by Automattic. WordPress.com may use cookies or similar technologies required to deliver, secure and administer the website.

Some WordPress.com technologies may be set when a page loads, while others are only used when a visitor performs a particular action or is logged into a WordPress.com account.

Cloudflare Turnstile

The contact form is protected using Cloudflare Turnstile. Turnstile runs a browser-based security check, generates a verification token and sends that token for server-side validation.

The service may process technical information required to distinguish legitimate visitors from automated or abusive traffic.

These providers operate according to their own privacy and cookie documentation and may update their technical practices independently.

7. Consent and cookie preferences

Strictly necessary cookies do not require consent where they are essential to provide the requested website service or maintain security.

Optional cookies must not be activated until the visitor has made an affirmative choice, where consent is legally required.

Rejecting optional cookies must not prevent access to the principal public content of the HIGH-LEVEL website.

A visitor may change or withdraw a previously granted preference by:

  • using the cookie-preference control provided on the website, where available;
  • deleting the website’s cookies through the browser settings; or
  • configuring the browser to block selected categories of cookies.

8. Managing cookies through the browser

Most browsers allow visitors to view, delete or block cookies and to receive a warning before a cookie is stored.

The location of these controls varies by browser and device. They are normally available under headings such as Privacy, Security, Cookies, Site data or Tracking protection.

Blocking all cookies may affect the operation of some website functions, including login, security verification and the storage of cookie preferences.

9. Cookies and personal data

Cookie identifiers, IP addresses, browser information and security signals may constitute personal data where they identify or can be linked to an individual.

Where personal data is processed through cookies or similar technologies, the principles and rights described in the HIGH-LEVEL Privacy Policy also apply.

These include transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, limited retention, security and the rights of the data subject under the GDPR.

10. Changes to this Cookie Policy

This policy may be updated when the website, its hosting platform, its security services, its consent mechanism or the applicable legal requirements change.

Where a new non-essential cookie category or third-party service is introduced, the policy and the cookie-consent mechanism must be reviewed before that technology is activated.

The revision date displayed at the beginning of this page identifies the latest published version.
